Bend, Oregon Relationship Counseling Advice on Surviving the Holidays Single

December 17, 2011 by

From my many years practicing Bend, Oregon relationship counseling, I can tell you that whether or not you’re in a relationship, the holidays can cause a lot of stress, and just because you’re single doesn’t mean you can’t have relationship issues.

One of the biggest stressors that singles face is the idea that being in a relationship over the holidays will instantly remove their feelings of loneliness and “fix” everything. I blame this largely on how the holidays are portrayed and built up in the media, with images of happy couples and families bombarding us from all sides.

Believe me when I tell you that many of those same couples you’re so jealous of are just as jealous of all the time alone you have— no children, in-laws, or stressed partner for you to deal with!

Just because you’re single doesn’t mean you spend a lot of time alone. You’ve probably got coworkers, friends, and other responsibilities that take up a lot of your time. Well, since a lot of that stuff takes a break over the holidays, it can be a great time to do those things you just haven’t had time to get to – and that doesn’t mean taxes or Spring cleaning!

In Bend, Oregon relationship counseling, I’ve had clients tell me how happy they were to have alone time on the holidays to do things as mundane as go to the movies without having to make big plans and monumental as starting that novel they’ve been putting off for years. There are lots of great things you can accomplish alone over the holidays.

Single Doesn’t Have to Mean “Alone,” Bend, Oregon Relationship Counseling Tells Us

“Me” time is great, but we’re all social creatures, and eventually all those commercials with happy families and couples are bound to get to you. Don’t fall into the trap of letting your relationship issues get you down, though: make plans to be around other people.

If you have friends in town, make a lunch or dinner date. If you’re flying completely solo because everyone went home for the holiday, there are still plenty of ways to be around people, such as volunteering, attending local events for singles, or even just going to the movies. If you’re lucky, you might even make some new friends to make future holidays something to look forward to.

But if you ever feel like you just can’t deal with the stress of being alone on the holidays anymore, try Bend, Oregon relationship counseling.
